Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO est né à Aix le 11 janvier 1684, issu d’une famille de peintres flamands.

Il apprend très vite la peinture avec son père et réalise ses premières œuvres vers 20 ans. En 1712, à l’âge de 28 ans, il décide de parcourir l’Italie et d’enseigner son art à ses deux fils et à son jeune frère dont il a la garde depuis le décès de leur père. Lors de ce voyage, Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO rencontre le prince de CARIGNAN qui devient son mécène et qui lui permet d’étudier à Rome. En 1718, le prince de CARIGNAN doit revenir à Paris, prenant bien soin d’emmener son peintre favori. Lors de cette période parisienne, Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO réalise de nombreux portraits de notables, mais aussi des scènes religieuses. Son talent est repéré par LOUIS XV qui apprécie le portrait qu’avait peint de lui Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO de mémoire. Il lui confiera, à deux reprises, le soin d’exécuter à nouveau son portrait, mais cette fois en posant pour le peintre. Après avoir passé quatre années en Angleterre, il revient à Aix où il continue à peindre. Il devient le propriétaire du Pavillon Vendôme et y installe son atelier à l’étage supérieur.

Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO meurt dans sa ville natale le 19 septembre 1745, à l’âge de 61 ans. Il sera inhumé dans l’Église de l’Ancienne Madeleine, qui sera détruite avant d’être déplacée.

De tous les peintres de la dynastie des peintres VAN LOO, Jean-Baptiste restera celui qui aura le plus marqué la ville d’Aix même s’il vécut assez souvent loin de celle-ci.

Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO was born in Aix on January 11, 1684, from a family of Flemish painters.

He quickly learned painting with his father and made his first works around 20 years old. In 1712, at the age of 28, he decided to travel around Italy and teach his art to his two sons and to his younger brother, in his care since their father's death. During this trip, Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO meets the Prince of CARIGNAN who becomes his patron and who allows him to study in Rome. In 1718, the Prince de CARIGNAN was to return to Paris, taking great care to take his favorite painter with him. During this Parisian period, Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO produced many portraits of notables, but also religious scenes. His talent is spotted by LOUIS XV who appreciates the portrait painted of him by Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO from memory. He will twice entrust her with the task of painting his portrait again, this time posing for the painter. After spending four years in England, he returned to Aix where he continued to paint. He became the owner of the Pavillon Vendôme and set up his workshop there on the upper floor.

Jean-Baptiste VAN LOO died in his hometown on September 19, 1745, at the age of 61. He will be buried in the Church of the Ancient Magdalen, which will be destroyed before being moved.

Of all the painters of the VAN LOO dynasty of painters, Jean-Baptiste will remain the one who marked the city of Aix the most, even if he lived far enough away from it.
