Antoine AUDE est né à Aix le 17 janvier 1799.

Il fait des études de droit en compagnie de ses amis Adolphe THIERS et François-Auguste MIGNET. Maire d’Aix pendant treize ans, il obtient sa renommée en raison de son comportement dévoué lors de l’épidémie de peste qui frappe la Provence et Aix en 1835. Alors que tout le monde prend la fuite, il reste auprès de ses administrés, ce qui lui vaudra d’être décoré de la Légion d’honneur. Ses principales réalisations sont :

 l’éclairage au gaz de la ville d’Aix en 1841 ;

 la renaissance de l’Université d’Aix avec des facultés de droit, de théologie et de littérature ;

 la création de l’École des Arts et Métiers et de l’École Normale d’instituteurs ;

 la création du marché aux bestiaux ;

 la création du Musée d’Histoire Naturelle ;

 la mise en place de crèches pour permettre aux femmes d’aider leur mari aux champs ;

 la construction du Chemin de fer de Rognac ;

 la construction du Barrage de François ZOLA ;

 la conception du Canal du Verdon...

Antoine AUDE meurt dans sa ville natale le 19 mars 1870 à l’âge de 71 ans, en laissant l’image d’un des plus grands maires bâtisseurs qu’aura connu la ville d’Aix.

Réflexion d’odonymie :

La Rue Antoine AUDE remplace la Rue de l’OFFICIAL. Pourtant, elle a failli, après contestation d’un habitant, trouver sa place au boulevard qui va de la Porte SAINT-LOUIS à la Porte de la PLATEFORME. Vu que cette réclamation était isolée, le conseil municipal ne revint pas sur sa décision du 25 avril 1870.

Mayor of Aix for thirteen years, he obtained his fame because of his devoted behavior during the plague epidemic which struck Provence and Aix in 1835. While everyone fled, he remained with his constituents, which earned him the honor of being decorated with the Legion of Honor. Its main achievements are:

 the gas lighting of the city of Aix in 1841;

 the rebirth of the University of Aix with faculties of law, theology and literature;

 the creation of the School of Arts and Métiers and the Normal School of Teachers;

 the creation of the cattle market;

 the creation of the Natural History Museum;

 the establishment of nurseries to enable women to help their husbands in the fields;

 the construction of the Rognac Railway;

 the construction of the François ZOLA Dam;

 the design of the Verdon Canal ...

Antoine AUDE died in his hometown on March 19, 1870 at the age of 71, leaving the image of one of the greatest builder mayors to have known the city of Aix.

Odonymy reflection:

Rue Antoine AUDE replaces Rue de l'OFFICIAL. However, after protest by a resident, it almost found its place on the boulevard which goes from Porte SAINT-LOUIS to Porte de la PLATEFORME. Since this complaint was isolated, the municipal council did not reverse its decision of April 25, 1870.
