L’abbé David Augustin BRUEYS est peut-être né dans la rue qui portera son nom vers 1640.

Il est issu d’un milieu protestant : l’absence de registre de cette religion à cette époque explique que nous ne connaîtrons jamais sa date de naissance exacte. Cependant, il se convertit au catholicisme et est ordonné abbé avant de se consacrer à l’écriture de comédies théâtrales. Il est l’auteur du Grondeur, du Muet et de L’Opiniâtre. Avec son ami PALAPRAT, il rajeunit la Farce de Maître Pathelin.

L’abbé BRUEYS meurt à Montpellier, le 25 novembre 1723, à l’âge de 83 ans.

La Rue Abbé BRUEYS remplace la Rue de l’ANGE dont le nom n’a rien à voir avec un symbole religieux ni avec l’enseigne d’une auberge. L’ange était le sobriquet de Jean AUBERT qui fut le premier à bâtir au XVIIe siècle une maison dans une rue sans nom et qui prit naturellement son surnom. Il n’a pas eu la même chance qu’un certain BRETON ...

Father David Augustin BRUEYS may have been born in the street that will bear his name around 1640.

He comes from a Protestant background: the lack of a record of this religion at that time explains why we will never know his exact date of birth. However, he converted to Catholicism and was ordained abbot before devoting himself to writing theatrical comedies. He is the author of Le Grondeur, Le Muet and L’Opiniâtre. With his friend PALAPRAT, he rejuvenates La Farce de Maître Pathelin.

Father BRUEYS died in Montpellier on November 25, 1723, at the age of 83.

Rue Abbé BRUEYS replaces Rue de l'ANGE, the name of which has nothing to do with a religious symbol or with the sign of an inn. The angel was the nickname of Jean AUBERT who was the first to build a house in the 17th century in an unnamed street and who naturally took his nickname. He was not as lucky as a certain BRETON ...
