Antoine d’ENTRECASTEAUX est né à Aix le 7 novembre 1737.

À l’âge de 17 ans, il entre comme élève officier dans la marine à Toulon et sera nommé capitaine lors de son 38ème anniversaire. Après avoir navigué sur la Méditerranée, il vogue sur l’océan Atlantique pour venir en aide aux Américains en guerre contre les Anglais pour leur indépendance. À 50 ans, il découvre une nouvelle route vers la Chine avant d’être nommé pendant 2 ans gouverneur de l’île de France (actuelle île Maurice) et de l’île Bourbon (actuelle île de la Réunion).

En 1791, à l’âge de 54 ans, l’amiral d’ENTRECASTEAUX quitte Brest à la recherche de la flotte du navigateur La Pérouse, disparue en mer depuis deux ans. Sans avoir trouvé trace de ce naufrage ...

L’amiral Antoine d’ENTRECASTEAUX atteint du scorbut meurt en mer, sur son bateau, près de Java, le 20 juillet 1793 à l’âge de 56 ans.

Antoine d´ENTRECASTEAUX was born in Aix on November 7, 1737.
