After brilliant military studies, he carried out his first arms under the orders of ROCHAMBEAU and took part in the American War of Independence until 1783. Back in France, although he was of noble origin, he supported the people and the French Revolution of 1789.
Then, he followed BONAPARTE during his Italian campaigns between 1794 and 1800, and became commander of all French troops in Italy. These seized Rome on July 6, 1808, and he was tasked with arresting Pope Pius VII.
In April 1814, Emperor NAPOLEON was sent into exile for the first time on Elba Island. LOUIS XVIII takes power and reinstates the monarchy. In March 1815, the king charged General MIOLLIS, who had remained loyal to France, to intercept NAPOLEON in Golfe Juan on his return from Elba Island. General MIOLLIS voluntarily fails and helps NAPOLEON BONAPARTE to regain power. The Emperor, grateful, will appoint MIOLLIS governor of Metz in April 1815. This will be the period of the "Hundred Days", period during which NAPOLEON led the "second Empire" before its defeat at Waterloo on June 18, 1815 and his final exile on the island of Saint Helena, the following month.
LOUIS XVIII becomes king of France again for the second time. Angry with MIOLLIS for his support for the Emperor, he urges him to retire, but still grants him a full pension in view of his glorious past.
