François SALLIER est né à Aix le 21 mai 1767.

Il ne partage pas avec son père la passion de ce dernier et a plutôt un goût prononcé pour les arts et les antiquités. Pendant la Révolution française à laquelle il participe activement, il part en Italie parfaire ses connaissances artistiques. De retour à Aix, il est nommé par le consul BONAPARTE maire d’Aix de 1802 à 1806 : ainsi, remet-il de l’ordre dans les finances de la ville ; il procède aussi à la remise en état des bains thermaux délabrés ; il rouvre l’Université ; il réorganise l’École de dessin et il impose la ville d’Aix comme dépositaire de la Bibliothèque du Marquis de Méjanes.

Durant sa vie, François SALLIER se crée une impressionnante collection de tableaux de maîtres, de médailles, d’antiquités égyptiennes, grecques et romaines... Sa pièce maîtresse sera constituée par les papyrus égyptiens déchiffrés par Jean-François Champollion - les "fameux papyrus SALLIER" du British Museum. 

François SALLIER meurt le 20 février 1831 à Aix à l’âge de 63 ans. Ne pouvant conserver tous ses objets de collection, la famille procédera à une vente aux enchères de ceux-ci qui aura comme effet de disperser son patrimoine à travers le monde.

François SALLIER was born in Aix on May 21, 1767.

He does not share the latter's passion with his father and rather has a pronounced taste for the arts and antiques. During the French Revolution in which he actively participated, he went to Italy to perfect his artistic knowledge. Back in Aix, he was appointed by the consul BONAPARTE mayor of Aix from 1802 to 1806: thus, he put order in the finances of the city; he is also repairing the dilapidated thermal baths; he reopens the University; he reorganized the School of Drawing and imposed the city of Aix as the depository of the Library of the Marquis de Méjanes.

During his life, François SALLIER created an impressive collection of paintings by masters, medals, Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities ... His centerpiece will be the Egyptian papyri deciphered by Jean-François Champollion - the "Famous Papyri SALLIER” from the British Museum.

François SALLIER died on February 20, 1831 in Aix at the age of 63. Not being able to keep all of their collectibles, the family will proceed to an auction of these which will have the effect of dispersing their heritage throughout the world.
