Joseph JOFFRE est né à Rivesaltes (Pyrénées Orientales) le 12 janvier 1852.
Il est le moins populaire des maréchaux français vainqueurs de la Première Guerre mondiale, s’étant pourtant distingué auparavant lors de batailles au Tonkin en 1885, au Soudan en 1892, ou encore à Madagascar en 1900.
