Ce boulevard rend hommage aux soldats de la Première Guerre mondiale qu’un grand nombre de femmes appelaient affectueusement les « Poilus ». Ceux-ci se battant dans les tranchées étaient sales, couverts de boue et privés d’eau propre, ils ne pouvaient pas se raser, d’où l’origine de leur sobriquet. Il est l’ancien Boulevard des ARMÉES qui conduit au Lycée Militaire d'Aix.

Réflexion d’odonymie :

Au début, les Aixois avaient pensé à changer le nom de la petite Rue SAINT-ESPRIT. Le conseil municipal trouvant cette rue « insuffisante » préféra changer le nom du Boulevard de l’ARMÉE nettement plus visible.

This boulevard pays homage to the soldiers of the First World War whom many women affectionately called the "Hairy". Those fighting in the trenches were dirty, covered in mud and deprived of clean water, they could not shave, hence the origin of their nickname. It is the old Boulevard des ARMÉES which leads to the Lycée Militaire d'Aix.

Odonymy reflection :

At the beginning, the Aixois had thought of changing the name of the small Rue SAINT-ESPRIT. The city council finding this street "insufficient" preferred to change the name of Boulevard de l'ARMÉE to be much more visible.
