Jean JAURÈS est né à Castres (Tarn) le 3 septembre 1859.

Il étudie le journalisme et l’Histoire avant de se passionner pour la politique. Il est élu député républicain de 1885 à 1889. Il devient le premier politicien social-démocrate élu à la tête du Parti socialiste français. Il crée un parti unique : la S.F.I.O. (Section Française de l’Internationale Ouvrière). En parallèle, il est journaliste, codirecteur du journal « La Petite République » et sera avec Émile ZOLA un des défenseurs du capitaine Alfred DREYFUS, dont l’affaire fut un scandale politique qui divisera la France en deux camps. 

En 1904, Jean JAURÈS fonde le journal « L’Humanité », qui deviendra l’organe officiel du Parti communiste français à partir de 1920. En tant que pacifiste militant, il s’attire l’hostilité des milieux nationalistes.

Jean JAURÈS est assassiné dans le café du Croissant à Paris par Raoul VILLAIN le 31 juillet 1914, la veille du déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale. Il n’avait que 54 ans. Dix ans plus tard, ses cendres seront transférées au Panthéon.
