Antoine MATTEI est né à Scola (Corse) le 23 mars 1917.

Il entre à la fameuse école militaire de Saint-Cyr à l’âge de 21 ans. Il en sort avec le grade de lieutenant lorsque la Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate. Lors de la Bataille de France, il est fait prisonnier par les Allemands et sera emprisonné pendant toute la guerre de 1940 à 1945.

Après sa libération, il fait l’intégralité de sa carrière dans la Légion étrangère où il s'illustre lors des campagnes d’Indochine (1946-1954) avant la guerre d’Algérie (1954-1962). Il est considéré comme une figure légendaire du 3ème Régiment étranger d’infanterie.

Mais ce qui le rendra célèbre, c’est qu’il fut le héros des livres à succès, écrits par Paul BONNECARRÈRE. Les deux livres les plus populaires seront : « Par le sang versé » (1969) et « La guerre cruelle » (1972).

Antoine MATTEI meurt le 31 mai 1981 à l’âge de 64 ans, avant d’être inhumé dans son village natal.

Antoine MATTEI was born in Scola (Corsica) on March 23, 1917.

He entered the famous military school of Saint-Cyr at the age of 21. He left it with the rank of lieutenant when World War II broke out. During the Battle of France, he was taken prisoner by the Germans and was imprisoned throughout the war from 1940 to 1945.

After his release, he spent his entire career in the Foreign Legion, where he distinguished himself during the Indochina campaigns (1946-1954) before the Algerian war (1954-1962). He is considered a legendary figure of the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment.

But what will make him famous is that he was the hero of the bestselling books written by Paul BONNECARRÈRE. The two most popular books will be: "Par le sang versé" (1969) and "La guerre cruelle" (1972).

Antoine MATTEI died on May 31, 1981 at the age of 64, before being buried in his native village.
