Toussaint Bernard ÉMERIC DAVID est né à Aix le 20 août 1755 dans la Rue du GRAND BOULEVARD,  qui porte désormais son nom.

Il obtient son doctorat en droit à tout juste vingt ans, mais exerce son métier d’avocat sans grande passion. S’intéressant à l’art, il décide de visiter l’Italie et part vivre à Florence et à Rome. Il commence à écrire de nombreux ouvrages sur la peinture et la sculpture. Ces travaux lui vaudront d’être mondialement reconnu en tant que critique d’art et archéologue. En 1787, il revient à Aix, au chevet de sa mère, et reprend alors sa profession d’avocat en intermittence avec celle d’imprimeur du roi, activité qu’il partage avec son cousin. Il devient maire d’Aix entre 1790 et 1791 et sera même député des Bouches-du-Rhône sous NAPOLÉON Ier en 1809.

Toussaint Bernard ÉMERIC DAVID meurt à Paris le 2 avril 1839, à l’âge de 83 ans.

Remarque d’odonymie :

Souvent, c’est à tort que l’on considère ÉMERIC comme le prénom de DAVID. Un grand nombre de plans y compris ceux de la Ville d’Aix, rangent alphabétiquement cet ancien maire à la lettre « D » et non à la lettre « E », contrairement au compositeur aixois Félicien DAVID.

Interested in art, he decided to visit Italy and moved to Florence and Rome. He began to write numerous works on painting and sculpture. This work will earn him worldwide recognition as an art critic and archaeologist. In 1787, he returned to Aix, to his mother's bedside, and then resumed his profession as a lawyer intermittently with that of the king's printer, an activity he shared with his cousin. He became mayor of Aix between 1790 and 1791 and was even deputy for Bouches-du-Rhône under NAPOLEON I in 1809.

Toussaint Bernard ÉMERIC DAVID died in Paris on April 2, 1839, at the age of 83.

Odonymy note:

People often mistakenly consider EMERIC to be DAVID's first name. A large number of maps, including those of the City of Aix, alphabetically rank this former mayor with the letter "D" and not with the letter "E", unlike the Aix composer Félicien DAVID.
