La Rue MATHERON porte le nom d’une famille aixoise non encore éteinte aujourd’hui.
L'ancêtre le plus célèbre à qui l'on doit probablement l'importance du nom de cette rue est Jean MATHERON.
À l’époque, ce grand homme d’affaires devient l’ambassadeur du Roi RENÉ qui l’appelait affectueusement « mon bon compère ». Il fut ensuite juge et conservateur des Monnaies jusqu’à la mort du Roi RENÉ , le 10 juillet 1480.

En 1483, LOUIS XI meurt et Jean MATHERON rentre à nouveau en grâce devenant ambassadeur du ROI CHARLES VIII à Florence, en Italie.
Jean Matheron meurt à Rome en février 1495.

Le Piédestal de la Statue du Roi RENÉ sculpté par DAVID d’Angers et inauguré au Cours MIRABEAU en 1823, contient deux médaillons : celui de Jean MATHERON et celui de Palamède de FORBIN. Ces médaillons furent réalisés pour honorer la mémoire de ces hommes qui avaient été les artisans de l’unification de la Provence à la France.

Rue MATHERON bears the name of an Aix family that has not yet died out.
The most famous ancestor to whom we probably owe the importance of the name of this street is Jean MATHERON.
At the time, this great businessman became King RENÉ's ambassador, who affectionately called him "my good friend". He was then judge and curator of coins until the death of King RENÉ on July 10, 1480.
Then, Jean MATHERON sided with the grandson of King RENÉ against LOUIS XI. Once crowned, the latter, in retaliation, seized all his property and removed all his functions.
In 1483, LOUIS XI dies and Jean MATHERON returns again in grace becoming ambassador of KING CHARLES VIII in Florence, in Italy.
Jean Matheron died in Rome in February 1495.

The Pedestal of the Statue of King RENÉ sculpted by DAVID d´Angers and inaugurated at Cours MIRABEAU in 1823, contains two medallions: that of Jean MATHERON and that of Palamède de FORBIN. These medallions were made to honor the memory of these men who had been the architects of the unification of Provence with France.
